Serpent Cult cover

The Serpent Cult enters Ruins on Stone Hill late, and at first only as a name. In the Dead Forest, the companions battle a crew led by the dark mage Voltark, alongside an earth elemental. Their prisoner Martan identifies Voltark’s people as the Black Adders, a sect of the Serpent Cult, and Voltark himself dies mid-warning: ‘You cannot stop the Serp…’ The unfinished sentence is Book 1’s clearest statement of scale. Whatever the Serpent Cult is, Voltark believed it could not be stopped by one town’s new heroes.

Book 1 gives a new reader only a few firm facts, and this page keeps to them. Martan says the cult is based out of Serpent’s Hollow. The Black Adders operate as a cell that can be sent toward Ravenford. They use dark magic, keep a scrying crystal for watching others at a distance, and leave behind a spellbook that Glolindir takes for study. Elladan has already theorised that someone is putting pressure on the Ravenford region — orcs, then a giant — and the Black Adders give that theory a plausible hand, though Book 1 does not prove the full chain in public text.

That restraint matters. The Serpent Cult is the threat Book 1 points toward rather than explains: the end of the book names Book 2, The Serpent Cult, and the companions return to Ravenford with urgent business and are led into the keep courtyard. Book 1 does not establish the cult’s motives, leaders, gods, rituals, or wider organisation, so the main text leaves them alone. What Books 2 and 3 reveal is in the collapsed sections below.

For a Book 1 reader, the right questions are the companions’ questions. Why Ravenford? Why now? Who was Voltark reporting to, and who else has been watched through the scrying crystal? Ruins on Stone Hill earns those questions; the next book is where readers should go for answers.

See Ruins on Stone Hill for the Dead Forest battle, and Ravenford for the town in the cult’s path. For the novel of the same name, see Serpent Cult (Book 2).

Black Adders

The Black Adders operate as a cell that can be sent toward Ravenford. They use dark magic, keep a scrying crystal for watching others at a distance, and leave behind a spellbook that Glolindir takes for study.

In the Dead Forest, the companions battle a crew led by the dark mage Voltark, alongside an earth elemental. Their prisoner Martan identifies Voltark’s people as the Black Adders, a sect of the Serpent Cult, and Voltark himself dies mid-warning: ‘You cannot stop the Serp…’

Martan is the Black Adders’ coerced guide, and he surrenders in the Dead Forest battle.

After Book 1 — spoilers for Book 2, Serpent Cult

Serpent Cult shows how much more there is. Brought before Baron Gryswold, Martan tells his story and is freed. A séance over Voltark’s corpse yields a warning: ‘they’ll enthrall… you all…’. Ships are vanishing from Merchant’s Bay. At Cape Marlin, black-robed mages use a deserted lighthouse with a permanent summoning circle, which brings a barghest demon, and a goblin army gathers on the cliffs.

In Ravenford, assassins attack Maltar’s house and steal Voltark’s body. Voltark returns, revived, at Andrella’s gala. Giant serpents burst from the ground of the keep courtyard, and he announces: ‘We are the Serpent Cult. You shall all bow down before us and worship our Serpent God, or you shall die here tonight!’ Lloyd cuts him down again. The cult’s leaders and its god stay unnamed.

After Book 2 — spoilers for Book 3, Dark Monolith

Dark Monolith shows what the cult is after: the works of Larketh, the Golem Thrall Master. They have taken Telvar’s research and gone to an ancient monolith in the Darkwoods for Larketh’s notes, hoping to build an army of constructs. Black mages and serpents attack the companions inside.

On the way, the party recovers a fist-sized black gem through which a woman’s voice speaks. The seeress Elistra explains that such gems can locate, communicate with, and control others at a distance. The companions bag it rather than risk destroying it. Book 3 never names the voice. At the end the last black mage flees, and Seth follows him.
